I was very taken by the inner-life of this girl with the green face. She is giving someone, or something, some serious ‘side-eye’, and I was interested in finding out more about her. The resulting short story, Marguerite – written for The Kick-About No. 138 and directly inspired by the girl in Alexei von Jawlensky’s 1910 painting – took me a bit more time to finish, but I really enjoyed writing it and could see the whole thing very clearly from the outset. I don’t want to say too much about how events play out, but suffice to say there is a mystery here and, in spite of the literary trappings, this is no fairy tale…
