At the very end of July, I was visited by a small team of creative people from The Modern House—not because my house is ‘modern’ (it’s not), but because they’ve launched a new thread about gardens too. Lifelong gardener and journalist Francine Raymond is leading the series How My Garden Grows and she is exploring various gardens through articles, a podcast, and even a short film. It was fun to do and the whole vibe is very chatty and relaxed, and the first episode went live yesterday. The plan is that The Modern House will return to our garden throughout the course of next year to see it as it develops through the seasons. Listening to the podcast yesterday for the first time, I was amazed they’d been able to patch anything cogent together—what with the keening seagull chicks, passing pesdestrians and cars (we are end-of-terrace), and my inability to remember the proper names of the plants – or indeed my husband’s height…. Kudos to Ellen Hancock for the photography too (it was threatening to rain for the whole time she was there!).

You’ll find Francine’s article here and within that, links out to the podcast and video.

  1. Hi Phil, this is one post I really can’t miss! My wife Carol and I have always been keen gardeners, although since Covid we have been less so! During the weekend we will watch the video and maybe even have more comments 😊 Looking forward to meeting you there. Happy days. 🏡

  3. I loved reading this article so much! And the photos are fabulous. How excellent to get a glimpse into your world. We have a lot of space in our garden, and it’s sadly neglected. Yours is a thing of wonder!

    1. Hey Judy! Well, it’s a teeny tiny space, which helps us keep it interesting all year round – without too much effort these days! Hope all is good with you X

  4. It sounds like a lot of effort! Pruning every day, planting bulbs, fertilising at the right time, umpiring and so on. Bravo!
