There is a long-running radio programme on the BBC called ‘Just a Minute’, in which contestants are given one minute to talk about a given subject for a minute without repetition or deviation. Fittingly, I was listening to this half-hour programme in the kitchen while pinning a selection of foliage and flowers from the garden to a polystyrene head for The Kick-About No. 142.

The leaves were harvested quickly—because it was about to rain—and this Vertumnus-inspired head was started and finished in just under thirty minutes. Early next morning, I took him out into the garden and photographed him in his element. Admittedly, it’s all a bit more ‘Midsommar’ than Arcimboldo!

  1. Phil, this is brilliant. My wife & I love it. Midsomer? Here you celebrate the culmination of the summer, its abundance! In a few weeks Celts, & pagans around the world, will celebrate the end of summer & the beginning of winter, Samhain! I hope that your “green man” survives until then & you too can echo these sentiments. 🙏

  2. Unreal Phil! I wonder will it look even more macabre when it starts to rot?
