The Kick-About No.91 is a spookier affair, taking Harry Clarke’s illustrations for Edgar Allan Poe’s Tales of Mystery & Imagination as its macabre muse this week. Clarke’s black and white illustrations are characterised by their surface pattern and detail; they are noisy with line and texture. For my part, I was interested in dialling things up similarly and playing some cinematic games inspired by my affection for certain horror films, or certain scenes from certain horror films, primarily those quiet and unshowy moments that unnerve most deliciously. But for all of that, I’m getting some classic Karloff vibes from a few of these alternate images and a hint of poignancy too. Here, ‘the visitor’ seems less like he’s harbouring some sinister intent and more like he’s a touch too shy to say hello…
