I have a cardboard box in my wardrobe full of socks. The socks often escape their confines and proliferate like tribbles. Inspired by the digital glitches and ‘missing pixels’ that feature in Melissa Cody’s wonderful textiles—muse for The Kick-About No.119—I decided to scan my socks, while moving them fractionally in different directions; by moving them more quickly I could produce a ‘finer weave’ than if I moved them more slowly. The resulting images are the completed scans.

  1. I couldn’t do this with my socks….they’re usually very plain! Great work, Phil.

    1. Thank you, Kerfe: to be honest, many of these never find their way into practical use, which is why this ‘box of socks’ is a bone of contention in our house, but at least I can say I found a use for some of them now!

      1. An artist can find a use for any/everything–which is why we never throw anything out.

  3. From Cody’s weaving through to the sock box being emptied, to them filing up for a scan, an agitated scan at that, is quite the creative journey to discovery. Hats and socks off to you Phil!!
