The last edition of The Kick-About found us immersed in the symbolic world of Kiki Smith, where myth, body, and nature intertwined. This time, the mood shifts as we relish the biting wit and exaggerated forms of James Gillray, inspiring these latest works created in a short time. I liked Gillray’s animal/human creatures, but I couldn’t bring myself to use any of our current “leaders” like he did. It seemed insulting to the animals. So I just created some hybrids in collage and placed them into the environments of some postcards I had. Then I let the Collage Box Oracle have its say, in its usual enigmatic and cryptic fashion. The world gets stranger by the minute…

“I wonder is this a bit politically incorrect… but then isn’t that what Gillray was all about? A sugar doughnut and extra large sized dress both in the same bridal shop…”

Phil Gomm

“This prompt made my 3D-fingers itch: something about Gillray’s physical deformations and soft, pink colour palette had me defaulting to this technique, in which you ‘free-build’ out of pads of stuffed nylon and use a needle and thread to ‘sculpt’. Next, you use PVA glue to harden the object, and then you can get on with painting. Handy for me that Gillray’s cartoons extend to images of guillotined heads being displayed on pikes (meaning I didn’t have to give time and energy to fabricating bodies!). My husband said, ‘It’s Mrs Thatcher!’ and there is a touch of her Spitting Image puppet about this self-important ‘aristo-king’.”

“I really didn’t think I could take part in this prompt, it is so far out of my comfort zone, but, never ventured, never gained.  At this time there are two characters who will be known globally, both aspiring to be “Emperor”.  Love or hate them, we cannot ignore them!”

I was so struck by the relevance of Gillray’s work to current  affairs, I could  only superimpose some modern political ‘characters’ over Gillray’s concept.

“This little pic drew itself! Thank you James Gillray for offering up the opportunity. The madness is unleashed.”

“Working from James Gillray as a particularly interesting prompt, it was the exaggerated features of his caricatures that stuck out and helped me find my creative North Star this time around. With big, bold, strange features in mind, I turned to the trunks of nearby trees in search of similarly interesting portraits; hoping to find the naturally occurring features of 1000 year old faces…”

And for our next prompt, x marks the spot!
