Red's Kingdom

It’s been another satisfying year of play and experimentation. largely thanks to the continuing ingenuity and energy of my fellow ‘Kick-Abouters’, who never disappoint in the ‘turning up and just getting on with it’ department. But, of course, it’s so much more than that, because the ‘getting on with it’ part is that alchemical ability to take an existing prompt and then serve it back up a hundred different ways. It’s the game of it, and the quest, and the slight sense I always have of ‘Oh no! There’s nothing there…’, only to discover the pilot-light has popped on again and something is warming up.

This next bit is likely where I’ll say something about how I find it hard to believe that this is the Kick-About’s fourth year – and I do think that – but mostly I think I’m lucky to be keeping company with such a nice bunch of artists, makers and creatives, who, I hope, are also taking this moment to look back at their work and feel that small, sweet bump of satisfaction – which is the feeling you get when you hold back the miseries and the slumps with just the bristles of your brushes or the rasp of your pencil. Thanks again you lot – you know who you are!
