Improbably, this marks the 156th edition of The Kick-About – a fortnightly creative challenge first started in response to the longueurs of lock-downs.

The premise is simple: make something new in response to a given prompt in under fourteen days or less. Gathered here are my various responses, and while they might seem quite different at first glance, they share certain preoccupations with transformations, processes and with storytelling, There’s been a lot of making this time out and this is certainly a response to the amount of screen time required by my proper job. There is rest and relaxation in handling physical materials and manifesting three-dimensional artefacts out of actual ‘stuff’. There are stories too, for this is where I’m happiest, though this work feels like work in ways that casting things from plaster never does; there are fewer ‘happy accidents’ when you’re putting one word in front of another.

This is always an opportunity to thank everyone else who continues to ‘kick-about’ with me from one prompt to the next. I start things because I know you’re starting them and I finish things because I know you’re finishing them too. It is harder to procrastinate in your company and easier to find the energy at the end of the day to get on with something unimportant/imperative. Your continuing company is warmly appreciated.
