I was charmed by the character designs in Hermína Týrlová’s 1963 animation, The Glass Marble—prompt for The Kick-About No. 166—and got thinking about Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar by association: something about the reduction of animals to their essential shapes. The animals in Týrlová’s film are delighted by something as pleasing as a marble, so I cast some marbles of my own in plaster and then decoupaged them with a bunch of bugs cut from some wrapping paper.
