• Hermione Gray & The Murdered Magician (2023)

There’s that quote from the movie, Forrest Gump, that famously goes: ‘Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get’. Well, The Kick-About is like that too, so I’m not going to say too much about my response this week, except to say it could only have come as…

  • The Kick-About #76 ‘The Painter’s Room’

Our last Kick-About was inspired by Bosch’s painting, The Garden Of Earthly Delights, famous for the unknowability of many of its signs, symbols, allegories and imagery. No less perplexing perhaps is this week’s jumping-off point, a painting by Lucian Freud that shares little with his unflinching representations of the human body, and much more with…

  • Short film: Tuinvolk (2023)

This week, The Kick-About No.75 had Hieronymus Bosch’s deliciously abstruse painting, The Garden Of Earthly Delights, as its prompt, and I was prompted to produce a little maquette in homage to the strange pink architecture in Bosch’s landscape and likewise his swarms of small pink people.

    Garden Fragment (2023)

I was very drawn to all the shell-pink structures and prawnish people in Bosch’s wonderfully strange and limpid painting, The Garden Of Earthly Delights – prompt for The Kick-About #75 – so set about building a miniature version of something that might look at home in Bosch’s landscape. Sadly, I couldn’t get my hands on…

  • The Kick-About #75 ‘The Garden Of Earthly Delights’

Our previous Kick-About together was inspired by the organic, floating vessels of Ruth Asawa, exemplars of restraint. Much less so, the teeming visual motifs characterising Bosch’s extraordinary three-act painting, a maximalism of symbols, detail and hybridity. Bosch’s garden has made for a fertile stomping ground for these latest works made in a short time. Welcome…

  • After Asawa #3 (2023)

A final set of Ruth Asawa-inspired photographs produced in advance of The Kick-About No.74, wherein simple cones of ruled transparent acetate give rise to delicate shell-like impressions.

  • Throwback Friday #143 New Year’s Eve, Whitstable (2019)

As for New Year’s Eve 2022… weather-wise, it was a big wash-out, and the usual ad-hoc displays of fireworks on Whitstable beach noticeably fewer. No so back in 2019.

  • After Asawa #2 (2023)

A second bunch of photographs inspired by Ruth Asawa and produced in the run-up to The Kick-About No.74. This set were taken under different lighting conditions, producing these more sepia tones. They put me in mind of old architectural prints or zoological cross-sections.

  • After Asawa #1 (2023)

Ruth Asawa’s sculptures – our prompt for The Kick-About No.74 – at once reminded me of the sorts of drawings produced by childhood Spirographs – not so much the organic shapes, but their transparency, layering, and particularly the densifying of line and mesh as the interior and exterior shapes combine.

  • The Kick-About #74 ‘Ruth Asawa’

In common with our last Kick-About together, which was inspired by cephalopods (those buoyant, ballooning denizens of the deep), this latest showcase of new works made in a short time features an array of responses to floating, globular forms – specifically the work of Ruth Asawa. Happy browsing.
