I went to see Robert Egger’s Nosferatu a few weeks ago; I think it must be living in imagination still! In approaching these self-portraits for The Kick-About No.124, I was also thinking of backstage photographs I’ve seen of the likes of Laurence Olivier and Gielguld as King Lear or Prospero. And maybe it’s because I’ve just had a big birthday that I was interested in embracing the old father time vibe.

I used silver face paint and this metallic paste on my beard and scalp, as I knew the black and white would eat that up in terms of pushing the texture. In classic Kick-About style, I gave myself 90 minutes to get these portraits done and dusted; the bathroom sink suffered for my art!

  1. These are really dramatic! Do you have a background in stage & drama? There is also something in these that reminds me of an old movie with Greek Gods moving pieces around a global chessboard! Which God though!

    1. … well, there’s a bit of ‘am dram’ back in the day, but I think it’s much easier to make self-portraits if you’re in character.
