A few weeks back I was on holiday at a house with a small swimming pool. It was incredibly hot, and the pool was beloved by clouds of thirsty wasps and hornets, so floating about on a lilo was often an act of courage. We had some friends staying with us, and much of our time was spent in and around the pool. Our friends’ daughter had lovely Pre-Raphaelite hair and, even though the water was pellucid and the skies above perfectly blue, there was something striking about the way her hair covered her face each time she surfaced from an underwater headstand or somersault. I was reminded at once of Klimt’s painting Water Nymphs—a painting I love for its strangeness—and asked permission to produce these portraits.
