In our last Kick-About, Odilon Redon’s The Cyclops prompted all manner of responses to its one-eyed giant. This week, we turn to The Glass Marble by Hermína Týrlová, the Czech animator and pioneer of puppet and object animation. “I started looking at marbles and decided to try to paint them. Not as easy as it looks! But so many beautiful colors and patterns caught inside the glass.”

“I was charmed by the character designs in Hermína Týrlová’s animation and got thinking about Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar by association: something about the reduction of animals to their essential shapes. The animals in Týrlová’s film are delighted by something as pleasing as a marble, so I cast some marbles of my own in plaster and then decoupaged them with a bunch of bugs cut from some wrapping paper.”

“I was scratching around looking for a way into this KA and found a pic of a lion I took a few years ago at a great open range zoo in South Australia. This one chap was lying on his back enjoying the sun so I ditched the observing kitty for this big guy and somehow it turned into something about the UK – not sure what, now that you have a new head honcho, but ‘time will tell!’”

“It’s been a little while since I last contributed to the Kick-About, but I couldn’t resist this latest prompt of The Glass Marble! Searching for a route in, I became inspired by a shot in the third act of the colourful creatures jumbled together that, to me at least, reads as sort of city skyline. Armed with this inspiration, I set to fleshing out the world that these creatures could belong to, along with some additional animals that might inhabit this geometric city!”
Next time, where we’re heading is anybody’s guess, but getting there promises to be quite a journey…
