This week’s 130th edition of The Kick-About marks the fifth anniversary of an activity first started back during the strange, listless days of the COVID lock-downs. The short version is that, every two weeks, a loose collective of artists make ‘new work in a short time’ in response to a specific prompt. This is the point of the year when I drag everything back out into the light to remind myself of my own efforts over the course of this last cycle of ‘doing stuff’.
Things move on quickly, so it’s always interesting to be reminded of all the different approaches taken and techniques—and this past year it’s been everything from scanning my socks, puddling enamel paint, and making severed heads (there’s always a severed head).
It’s been a lot of fun and keeps me buoyant – and boyish. It’s all a bit Heath Robinson behind-the-scenes at times, especially when it’s getting pretty late and I’m still wrangling some half-baked idea into submission; and people will ask me, ‘But Phil—what is it for?’ or ‘Why does it matter?’
I don’t always have the answer to this, but right now, as I look at all these little finished things, I have my answer today.

Phil, your work is consistently impressive. I don’t know how you do it. You remain so fresh, so creative and so innovative. I’m so glad to have found you, your work and the Kick-about five years ago. By the way, I feel like a complete cheat to have been included in the 5 year anniversary edition, having been AWOL for much of it, but thank you. x
