I was charmed by the character designs in Hermína Týrlová’s 1963 animation, The Glass Marble—prompt for The Kick-About No. 166—and got thinking about Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar by association: something about the reduction of animals to their essential shapes. The animals in Týrlová’s film are delighted by something as pleasing as a marble, so I cast some marbles of my own in plaster and then decoupaged them with a bunch of bugs cut from some wrapping paper.

  1. Ingenious, vibrant; I love them but I wouldn’t want to play a game with these beauties!

    1. Thank you, Ashley – they ended up being very pleasing things (unless you don’t like bugs!)

  2. They are beautiful. I would place them on a shelf in front of some books (if I had a shelf with and for books in this apartment…) Or perhaps in a bowl on the coffee table. But it would need to be the right bowl. (K)

  3. Thanks Kerfe – I took this away to gather dust in the old house in France – had I seen your comment first, I’d would have bubble-wrapped them and sent them to you!
